Mission Statement

Community Youth Orchestras consist of three orchestras with students ages ten through young adult.  Students are selected by audition from Acton, Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, Boston, Boxborough, Brookline, Cambridge, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Concord, Lexington, Lincoln, Medford, Needham, Waltham, Weston, Winchester and Woburn.  Weekly rehearsals for all orchestras are held in the state of the art Performing Arts Center at Belmont Day School, located at 55 School Lane in Belmont, MA.  Concerts are performed in December and May in Lexington, MA. In February, CYO members may audition for the Concerto Competition in which the winner(s) will perform in the May concert.

Repertory Orchestra

Rehearsals- Sundays 2:30-4:00 p.m.

The Repertory orchestra is composed of students in grades five through eight consisting of strings, harp, and percussion. This orchestra level is comparable to to Suzuki Bks. 4.  Students must exhibit proficiency in sight reading.  This ensemble performs level III orchestra repertoire from Baroque through popular styles.

Advanced Orchestra

Rehearsals- Sundays 5:30-7:30 p.m.

The advanced orchestra is comprised of highly motivated musicians, high school through college age.  The full orchestra performs advanced level repertoire of various styles.  Students accepted to this orchestra must exhibit refined orchestral technique as well as highly proficient sight reading skills.

Advanced Chamber Ensemble

Rehearsals- Sundays 4:00-5:30 p.m.

The chamber ensemble is open by audition to motivated string players from the advanced orchestra.  This ensemble provides students with the opportunity to explore challenging repertoire and independent playing.  The chamber ensemble performs in the December and May concerts and represents CYO in various community performances.  The ensemble's past performances include the Stein Chamber Music Festival, Massachusetts Educator's Conference, Heritage Museum of Lexington, New Repertory Theatre Gala and Massachusetts State House.  The chamber ensemble also performs for the elderly- sharing joy through the gift of music during the holiday season.  Students enrolled in this ensemble earn community service credit which can be applied to their respective school programs.

Rehearsals and Concerts

All rehearsals are held in the state of the art Performing Arts Center at Belmont Day School, 55 Day School Lane, Belmont, MA.  Concerts are held at the National Heritage Museum, 33 Marrett Road, Lexington.

Students are required to enroll for both semesters
